{"id":5143,"date":"2012-08-22T04:49:58","date_gmt":"2012-08-22T12:49:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theedublogger.edublogs.org\/?p=5143"},"modified":"2014-04-22T18:38:41","modified_gmt":"2014-04-23T02:38:41","slug":"6-tips-for-attracting-more-comments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theedublogger.com\/6-tips-for-attracting-more-comments\/","title":{"rendered":"6 Tips for Attracting More Comments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re often asked &#8220;How do you get more people to read and respond to blog posts?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Good question! \u00a0We all gain more out of blogging when we comment.<\/p>\n<p>Comments motivate, provide feedback and advice, challenge our\u00a0thoughts\u00a0and views, make us reflect on what we&#8217;re learning.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge is how do we attract more comments?<\/p>\n<p>Below&#8217;s my tips for\u00a0attracting\u00a0more\u00a0comments for personal educational blogging. \u00a0Check out Kathleen Morris&#8217;s tips for <a href=\"http:\/\/primarytech.global2.vic.edu.au\/2011\/09\/23\/attracting-blog-comments\/\">&#8216;Attracting blog comments&#8217; on class and student blogs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What are yours? \u00a0Would love to read your tips in the comments below! \u00a0Or your thoughts on reasons why people don&#8217;t leave comments!<\/p>\n<h2>1. \u00a0Become a better blog citizen<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5151\" title=\"Adding a comment\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theedublogger.com\/files\/2012\/08\/comment61-wlhper.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theedublogger.com\/files\/2012\/08\/comment61-wlhper.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.theedublogger.com\/files\/2012\/08\/comment61-wlhper-187x250.jpg 187w, https:\/\/www.theedublogger.com\/files\/2012\/08\/comment61-wlhper-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Blogging is as much about reading other blogger\u2019s posts and commenting on posts as it is writing your own posts.<\/p>\n<p>Besides being a valuable source of ideas for writing your own posts it helps develops relationships with others.\u00a0\u00a0 Interaction with other bloggers and their readers, in comments, often leads to new readers of your blog.<\/p>\n<p>You can&#8217;t expect people to read and comment on your posts if you aren\u2019t doing the same on other people\u2019s blogs!<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how you do in 3 simple steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Start reading other people&#8217;s blogs<\/strong> &#8211; make it time efficient by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/teacherchallenge.edublogs.org\/2011\/01\/20\/kick-start-activity-4-%E2%80%93-beginner-%E2%80%93-connecting-with-others\/\">setting up Google Reader<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"http:\/\/coolcatteacher.blogspot.com.au\/2011\/04\/15-fantastic-ways-to-use-flipboard.html\">using FlipBoard<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Make an effort to write comments on other people&#8217;s blog posts<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0Don\u2019t comment for comment sake. \u00a0Comment to share thoughts, expand on post comment and use <a href=\"http:\/\/help.edublogs.org\/2009\/07\/31\/engaging-with-readers-through-comments\/\">subscribe to be notified of new comments if the option is included<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reply to comments on your own posts<\/strong> &#8211; replying to comments demonstrates you read and value their comments. It also builds relationships with your readers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>2. \u00a0Build your Personal Learning Network (PLN)<\/h2>\n<p>Personal Learning networks are important for educational bloggers because:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Educators are more social than ever and more likely to use links shared by friends on social network sites like Twitter, Facebook and Google+ as their main source of blog posts worth reading.<\/li>\n<li>Educators who are already connect online are more likely to read and respond in comments to your posts than work colleagues, friends and family who\u00a0aren&#8217;t\u00a0as connected.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here is how you do it in 2 simple steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Enable social sharing on your posts<\/strong> &#8211; make it easier for readers to share your content on their social networks (we use AddThis Social Share plugin)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Build your PLN<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/teacherchallenge.edublogs.org\/challenges-2\/creating-a-pln\/\">learn how to here<\/a>, look at how you might use social networks like Facebook to interact\u00a0and make sure you include <a href=\"http:\/\/theedublogger.com\/2012\/02\/13\/the-updated-twitteraholics-guide-to-tweets-hashtags-and-all-things-twitter\/\">building relationships with educators on Twitter<\/a>. \u00a0Most educational bloggers tweet the link for their latest post (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/suewaters\/status\/238195179759230976\">here&#8217;s an example<\/a>) and tweet other people&#8217;s post they&#8217;ve enjoyed reading.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5154\" title=\"Enable social share\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theedublogger.com\/files\/2012\/08\/sharet61-s751kd.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theedublogger.com\/files\/2012\/08\/sharet61-s751kd.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.theedublogger.com\/files\/2012\/08\/sharet61-s751kd-250x74.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.theedublogger.com\/files\/2012\/08\/sharet61-s751kd-500x148.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>3. \u00a0Write better blog posts<\/h2>\n<p>Not every one who visits your blog post reads it. \u00a0Even if they do read &#8211;they often don\u2019t read it all. \u00a0Did you even read what I just wrote then? \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>To keep your readers attention&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Every post title<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Every paragaph<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Every heading<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Every word<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Every image<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8230;&#8230;has to count!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s even more important to be\u00a0attention\u00a0grabbing for readers like me who use magazine style apps, like FlipBoard, Zite or Pulse, for all our blog post reading on our mobile devices.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s why:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5156\" title=\"Reading posts using FlipBoard\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theedublogger.com\/files\/2012\/08\/flipboard51-1lljcxg.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theedublogger.com\/files\/2012\/08\/flipboard51-1lljcxg.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.theedublogger.com\/files\/2012\/08\/flipboard51-1lljcxg-250x187.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.theedublogger.com\/files\/2012\/08\/flipboard51-1lljcxg-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here is how you do it in 2 simple steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Learn how to write better blog posts<\/strong> &#8211; here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/teacherchallenge.edublogs.org\/2011\/01\/13\/kick-start-activity-2-%E2%80%93-beginner-%E2%80%93-effective-and-engaging-blog-posts\/#tips\">our tips to help<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>View your posts how readers are reading them<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; visitors to your blog only make up a small portion of your total readers. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/teacherchallenge.edublogs.org\/2011\/01\/20\/kick-start-activity-4-%E2%80%93-beginner-%E2%80%93-connecting-with-others\/\">Set up Google Reader<\/a>\u00a0(to see what it looks like via RSS) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/coolcatteacher.blogspot.com.au\/2011\/04\/15-fantastic-ways-to-use-flipboard.html\">use FlipBoard<\/a>\u00a0(if you have an iPad or Android tablet).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>4. \u00a0Write posts that encourage readers to comment<\/h2>\n<p>Most readers are relucant commenters, not because of lack of time, but because they feel uncomfortable leaving comments.<\/p>\n<p>However, some posts are more likely to make you want to comment than others.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s 2 simple steps that help:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t cover everything<\/strong> &#8211; incomplete posts are more likely encourage readers to comment than a comprehensive post that make readers feel that have nothing to contribute.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Invite readers to share their thoughts<\/strong> &#8211; ask readers to comment by finishing your post with some simple open-ended questions on information you would like to know.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>5. \u00a0You First, Readers Second!<\/h3>\n<p>One of the biggest reasons why new bloggers fail is they focus entirely on writing posts to please readers.\u00a0 Every post becomes a chore because they aren\u2019t writing about what interest them but what they think interests others!<\/p>\n<p>Stop worrying about others &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0<em>just blog, enjoy, have fun and learn!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Focus on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Writing about what you feel strongly or passionate about\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What\u00a0you&#8217;ve\u00a0learnt<\/strong> \u2014 if you\u00a0didn&#8217;t\u00a0know than it\u2019s likely others didn\u2019t either<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t stress about it being perfect<\/strong>\u00a0-blogging is a work in progress!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Accept not all posts will be commented on. \u00a0This doesn&#8217;t mean readers don&#8217;t value them or the posts aren&#8217;t being read. \u00a0The posts I write to encourage reader comments are very different from the posts that readers like to share, bookmark and refer back to.<\/p>\n<h2>6.
